Obituary

Arthur Lewis Capers was born March 22, 1954 in Childersburg, Alabama to his cherished mother, the late Bessie M. Capers.

Arthur was always wise beyond his years and a seeker of God’s own heart. He confessed his life to Christ at an early age and joined Trinity Baptist Church in Childersburg, AL.  He was born looking for the reflection of God in all he met, watching, and observing to find what good word or good deed he could do for another. Following in the steps ordered by his disposition, he found his adult life-long membership united with Shiloh Baptist Church in Selma, AL, where he was divinely appointed and served as Chairman of the Deacon Board, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Shiloh Baptist Church Choir, the Senior Choir, and the Male Chorus. While he tended to the very grounds of the church and made a joyful noise in song, he was not quick to speak his mind, but when he did, he was not shy about asking the right questions and giving his best compassionate, competent, and Christian advice.

His confessional role as a servant leader in Christ was equally matched in his professional role as a beloved student and leader in education. He received his early education in the Childersburg school system. Upon graduating from high school, he attended Alabama A & M University, where he received a B.A. in History. He also received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Alabama State University, an M.Ed., Principal Certification from Livingston University (University of West Alabama), and an Ed.S. from Nova Southeastern University.

Anyone who encountered Arthur knew he was a diehard Bulldogs fan.  It should come as no surprise that he served as a past president of the Dallas County Chapter of Alabama A & M University Alumni Association. More than that, Arthur took great pride in traveling back and forth to A & M football games and encouraging high school and prospective college students to attend his beloved alma mater whenever the opportunity presented itself.

Often heralded as one of Selma’s most proud and praised principals, Arthur began his professional educational career as a classroom teacher at McRae Gaines Learning Center. Selma City School System later employed him, where he served as a classroom teacher, Assistant Principal, Principal, Interim Superintendent, and Central Office Director. He retired from Selma City School System in 2018.

Arthur was also a staunch servant leader in his various community organizations which he served dutifully as Treasurer of the Selma Dallas County Emancipation Proclamation Committee, President of the Uniontown District Sunday School Congress, and Secretary/Treasurer of the Uniontown District Association.  He was also a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

On Saturday, December 17, 2022, Arthur passed away from his beloved wife’s care into the arms of God. In so doing, Arthur answered his Master's call and transitioned from labor to reward.

He leaves to cherish his memories a loyal, loving, and untiringly devoted wife, Lorraine Underwood Capers; son, Christopher Avery; sister, Anna Lee Townsend; brother, John Milton; aunts, Louise Swain, Annie Ruth Cohill, Aronia ( Rev. William) Funderburg; and Mattie Swain; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Groce, Jessie (Van) Stallworth, Ruthie Carter, Rosetta Underwood, Patricia (George) Phillips, Marilyn (Willie) Brown, Evelyn (Mac Arthur) Huff, Jacqueline (Terry) Floyd, Shirley (John) Spencer; brothers-in-law, Sidney Underwood, Jr., and Lee (Alberta) Underwood; godchild, Tyreshaun V. Harrid; special cousin, Johnny Shepard and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
