Gene Autry Johnson was born December 17, 1956, to the late Catherine Callens Johnson and Julius Thomas in Selma, AL. He professed Christ and was baptized at an early age. Gene was educated in the Selma-Dallas County School System and worked in the manufacturing industry for more than 40 years.
Gene had a strong belief in God and loved to attend Bethel Church in Selma, AL, where he worshiped his heavenly Father and was met with love from his church. As a man of faith, the characteristics of peace and strength were seen in the things he said, the things he did, and in his smile despite any trial in his life. Gene lived his life authentically by appreciating the "realness" of what life offered and enjoyed taking pictures of those candid moments.
Gene, with a sincere desire to make people smile, never met a stranger and was loved and respected by many. His smile, laugh, and ability to light up a room will truly be missed by all.
Gene was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Ann Johnson and Bertha Hunter; five brothers: Tommy Johnson, William Johnson, Leroy Johnson, Lue Johnson and Raymond Callens; one sister-in-law, Laura (Robert) Griffin; six brothers-in-law: Edward Carter, Louis Hunter Jr., Robert Bonner Jr., Nathaniel Bonner, William Bonner and Harrell Sims.
He transitioned peacefully on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at home, surrounded by family. He leaves a lifetime of precious memories to be cherished by one daughter, Britney Smith of Tallahassee, FL; two sons: Desmond Bostick of Selma, AL and Montrez Legg of Casa Grande, Arizona; one stepson, Sherrick Smith of Birmingham, AL; six grandchildren: Nicholas “Nick” Bostick, Desmeana “Boosie” Bostick, Aereona “Peanut” Battle, J’Lesiah “ReRe” Parrish, Jasmin “Jas” Parrish, and Montraviah “Tuddy” Legg; one sister, Cora Carter of Haverstraw, NY; one aunt, Louise Jenkins of Chicago, IL; and longtime special friend, Retha K.
